This Weekend: 45th Annual Fungus Fair

This Saturday and Sunday, you have an opportunity to make friends with fungus. Specifically, it’s time for the 45th Annual Fungus Fair, which takes place this weekend starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6. This celebration of wild mushrooms offers a multiplicity of opportunities to learn more about the fungal side of life.

On Saturday, there will be activities for children as well as cooking demonstrations, lectures, a focus on cultivation and myco-remediation and soup for sale. (One of these things truly does not sound like the others, but there you have it.) Then on Sunday, there will be displays of more than 200 species of wild fungi collected in the Bay Area. You’re invited to bring in your specimens for identification, so jump on that opportunity!

Also on Sunday, there will be a variety of educational tables on subjects including medicinal mushrooms, toxiciology, cultivation, ecology and lichens as well as microscopes and spore prints. Vendors include Aloha Medicinals, Far West Fungi, Gayle Lee Still Fiber Arts, King of Mushrooms, Lucy Martin Art, Paulywog Art Glass and Wine Forest Wild Foods.

Tickets range from free to $10, depending on whether you wish to attend one or both days. See the website for more information. Child aged 5 and under can attend for free, while children aged 6-12 can attend for $5. Students with identification and seniors aged 65 and older can attend for $8. Regular adult admission is $10.

The 45th Annual Fungus Fair (it’s just so fun to say!) takes place at the San Francisco County Fair building, 1199 9th Avenue. Enjoy!
