This Weekend: Christopher Willits
Wondering what to do this weekend? Wonder no more. Instead, head on over to The Independent and check out electronic music and guitar pioneer Christopher Willits, who is performing on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 at the door – such a bargain!
In addition to his electronic music and guitar activities, Willits is also a composer, producer, photographer, filmmaker and system designer who uses his self-designed software tools to, as Pitchfork put it, “paint with his guitar.” He works both on his own and in collaboration with fellow artists including Matmos, Zach Hill, Tycho, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Taylor Dupree, and he has released more than 20 albums over the last decade.
Based here in San Francisco, Willits holds a master’s degree in electronic music from Mills College. Prior to receiving his advanced degree, he attendeded the Kansas City Art Institute, focusing on painting, photography, video/installation art and sound art. He is also the founder and director of the community catalyst Overlap.org.
According to his artist statement, Willits designs experiences of sound and light, with the intention of creating a space for opening and reflection. “Art is a process of sublime communication and expression through which the validation or transformation of one’s own connection to everything, can occur,” he declares. “My work expresses and explores my experience- the gratitude, wonder and reverence of it all.”
If you go: The Independent is located at 628 Divisadero in San Francisco. The phone number is (415) 771-1421. Put on your thinking caps, bring your dancing shoes and enjoy!
