Waterfront development heights fall under debate

The San Francisco Examiner reports that this weekend marks the beginning of signature gathering on behalf of a campaign to limit waterfront development heights along San Francisco Bay’s 7.5 miles of coastline.

In order to place the initiative on the ballot, 9,702 signatures are needed by Feb. 3. However, if that fails to happen, supporters can also look toward getting on the November ballot.

Last Thursday, city attorney Dennis Herrera gave the green light to the title and summary of what is being called the Waterfront Development Height Increases initiative. According to the Examiner, this will allow supporters to begin gathering signatures in support of the effort.

Should the measure pass, proposed developments exceeding the height limits are subject to voter approval. Typical limits range from 40 to 150 feet.

Projects that would be immediately impacted are the Pier 70 housing and retail development, the Giants’ housing, retail and office space development at Pier 48 and the Warriors hotel and condo project at Piers 30-32.
