What does a basic bathroom remodel entail?

So you were brushing your teeth the other day and you realized your bathroom could use some updating. Then you thought about the price and your mood turned downward. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way.

While budget is a major determining factor of what you can and can’t do, Houzz points out that other major factors are how long you’ve been in the house and how long you plan to stay there. Even if you can’t afford a soup-to-nuts remodel, a basic job could well be in the cards.

So what does that mean? You could go as low as approximately $3,000 for a do-it-yourself remodel or as high as $12,000 for a basic job. While you won’t be able to move plumbing around at this level, you’re certainly able to replace fixtures and other materials with off-the-shelf products. “Off-the-shelf options have gotten a bit better in recent years,” designer Lynn Madyson told Houzz. “You can get a little creative by doing an interesting backsplash to make things look more high-end.”

At this level of remodeling, you might consider low-end granite and cultured marble countertops along with retiling a bathtub or shower area with ceramic tiles or standard white subway tiles. You might also consider painting the walls and refinishing or painting the cabinets.

Lighting, fixtures and finishes at this level will all be basic and off-the-shelf. Remember that you’ll likely be replacing them before a decade passes.

At this level permits are not typically needed, but it’s helpful to consult with an experienced contractor. However, you can also do it yourself – just remember to measure twice before you cut once.
